Did Jaclyn Hill Come Back Too Early?
Jaclyn Hill has returned to YouTube and some users were a bit confused and not happy with her newest video, “Where I’ve Been”. Although I don’t have any personal bias for or against Jaclyn, I do think that it was good move, from a PR standpoint, for her to apologize to the initial fan who had an issue with her lipsticks. However, I do wish her video was shorter and more to the point.
When reviewing scandals or crises from a consumer perspective, I try to put myself in their shoes. I recommend many PR consultants to do the same because I think it is more effective in doing our job. So, when I say that I wish the video was shorter, it’s from that consumer perspective. Many people, including myself sometimes, have a short attention span. This video seemed to be more slow moving in the narrative she’s trying to portray.
Additionally, she mentioned launching new products, which I thought was a bit too early. I think she really needs a PR makeover and to work on her reputation and image first before working on a launch. I personally would have recommended that she take a year before launching any new products. This gives her some time to build up trust again and a new image.
There are rumors that Jaclyn Hill is doing a collab with Morphe and that’s the reason why she’s coming back to YouTube. If this is true, I think many consumers would agree that her video was not genuine. I would have to agree if these claims were to be true.
When brands are hit by a crisis, they need to be extremely careful with what they do next. This is mostly because all eyes are on them. So, we know people are going to dissect every inch of Jaclyn’s return. That is why we are seeing a lot of consumers responding negatively to her video.
In conclusion, I wish she would’ve taken some more time away before making a comeback video. I wish she would’ve worked with a PR professional to create a campaign to help her build up her image. Although we can’t go back in the past, I think this is a good example of why you should act fast and act smart. If Jaclyn would’ve issued a recall and a concise apology from the beginning, I really believe her reputation wouldn’t have taken as big of a hit as it did.
